What is The Comparison Trap?

Man, this one comes up so much in my community, with myself, in my past, EVERYWHERE. Luckily part of my role is to provide equal parts kick-in-the-ass + arm-around-the-shoulder you need to deal with these things.

There are three reactions that humans have when we’re super freaked: fight, flight, or freeze. Everyone is familiar with the first two, yet a large amount of the people I interact with are stuck in the ‘freeze” mode.

And sometimes you just need a good shake up to get you out of freeze mode.

Trust me when I say, I’m coming from a place of empathy and compassion because I’ve been there. But I also am here to help shine a light and hold up a mirror so you can move past these things.

The famous quote from Theodore Roosevelt, “Comparison is the thief of joy” has never been more applicable or true. We’re human beings; social creatures. It is in your DNA to need others and to see if you fit in. Isolation is the worst.

Ironically, we’ve now built this technologically driven world where yes, we’re connected digitally, but we’re connecting less and less with people on a personal level. We’re less connected on a heart level.

And also, we’re only seeing a filtered version of what people want us to see. Combine those two things and you’ve got a toxic brew I call the comparison trap.
