Food For Humans is the funnest (yes, funnest) cookbook of 2013, hands down.
First, let’s start with a confession: I have a MASSIVE Paleo blogger / girl crush on Michelle Tam, creator of Nom Nom Paleo (I still want to dress up for Halloween as Charlie’s Angels with her and Mel from Well Fed 2…just sayin’). I’ve followed her site for years and was beyond honored when she asked me to guest blog for her a few months back. Together with her husband Henry Fong (of FitBomb fame), they’ve generated one of the *the* most respected Paleo blogs that’s ever existed. Flavor-packed, healthy real food recipes with a dose of gorgeous, simple photography and Nom Nom’s signature playful style (I mean c’mon…who else has kickass cartoon figurines of themselves?!) have made it a classic.
I’m happy to report: Food For Humans is all of the above wrapped into a perfectly constructed cookbook that’ll be one of the most loved in your collection.
Another confession: I have yet to hold a copy because it’s sitting in my American apartment while I’m here in Scotland, but Nom Nom was kind enough to let me peep my eyes at a virtual copy until I return home. All I can say is WOW! If the digital version is any sign of what’s to come, I’m going to be really chuffed in January when I get my mail.
Here are 5 things to love about Food For Humans
Reason #1 to love Food For Humans…
It’s packed with healthy recipes from the staples to the exotic.
If you’re familiar with Nom Nom’s blog, you know she coaxes big flavor out of simple ingredients, and you’re as likely to see a recipe for classic deviled eggs as you are for a steaming hot bowl of Pho. Food For Humans continues this trend and every category of the book has the basics AND recipes that’ll get you inspired to try something new (by the way, I’m drooling over Crab and Avocado Temaki!). Even if you’re a seasoned Paleo pro, you’ll find a dish you haven’t tried yet!
Reason #2 to love Food For Humans…
It’s got step by step instructions.
Visuals are huge for me, and I’ve always loved how Nom Nom includes stepwise photos in her recipes – especially slightly technical ones like how to make mayo (one wrong move will give you mayo *soup* instead of a creamy, dreamy topping) and how to fry the perfect crispy Paleo chicken nuggets. If you love simple, beautiful photos where the food is the star, buy it for that alone.
Reason #3 to love Food For Humans…
It’s whimsical and fun.
Pop out boxes and stories are interspersed between recipes, comic strip characters greet you as you flip pages and pictures of the Nom Nom crew in action abound. One thing I like about this book: the food and techniques are solid but it never takes itself too seriously. This one’s different than the rest!
Reason #4 to love Food For Humans…
It gets the kids involved.
Now Nom Paleo is all about getting the whole family involved in healthier eating. Big O and Lil’ O are quite obviously two of the coolest Paleo kids on the planet, and their food adventures are certainly a huge part of the book. Everything from how to pack Paleo-friendly lunches for little people to how the whole family gets in on the action at cooking time is documented here.
Reason #5 to love Food For Humans…
It’s newbie friendly.
If you took an encyclopedia and a Paleo cookbook and smashed them together, you’d get Food For Humans – and I mean that in a good way. Rather, if you’re new to eating this way and are looking for your sea legs, you’ll find enough of the basics in this book to give you the tools to create simple, refined, tasty meals with confidence. How to make bone broth, how to chiffonade leafy green things, how to hard boil the perfect egg…and much more…are all covered in this book. You’ll go from wet-behind-the-ears to über pro with Food For Humans. It’s truly a cookbook you can grow with.
