I’ve been experimenting more with homemade skin products in an effort to cut down the amount of toxic chemicals I’m slathering my body with day in and day out. This lip balm was inspired by a post I saw here and contains only natural, non-toxic ingredients. The quantity listed made about ten small, individual pots, so they’d be great to give away as gifts. If not, scale the quantity back by half.
You can really use any sort of essential oils you want: orange or peppermint would also be phenomenal. I’d probably stay away from any of the more floral or pungent scents though, because remember, this is going to be on your lips! If you’re not a fan of these little pots, you can find empty tubes for a more traditional stick lip balm. The texture will be firm, so it’s not like a lip gloss.
The original recipe I posted yielded a very firm balm and would be really good for warmer weather. To modify for cooler weather, I decreased the beeswax and increased the coconut oil.
Ingredients for Homemade Vanilla Lemongrass Lip Balm
- 3 Tablespoons beeswax
- 3 Tablespoons coconut oil
- 2 Tablespoons shea butter
- 1/4 teaspoon raw honey
- 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 8–10 drops lemongrass essential oil
- Empty containers (I bought these in a 10-pack)
Directions for Homemade Vanilla Lemongrass Lip Balm
- *If you’re going to melt the fats on the stovetop, use a small pot or pan, preferably one that you don’t mind getting a bit messy. The mixture will form a film inside the pot after you pour it, and it’s best to wipe it out with paper towels immediately to make clean up easier. You can also melt the fats gently in a glass container in the microwave.
- Combine the beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter and honey in a small pot.
- Melt the fats on very low heat and stir until they’re combined.
- Turn off the heat and mix in the vanilla and essential oil.
- Pour into small containers. Some find that using a dropper or disposable pipette helps this process and creates less mess.

Oh, I absolutely have to try this! I’m a lip balm freak. This might very well become a new obsession of mine! 🙂
I only need to find me some beeswax. That shouldn’t “bee” too hard, now, should it?
Awesome!! Definitely try it out. I got my organic beeswax on Amazon.
this is so genius! you amaze me 🙂 i want to do more DIY stuff this year 🙂 you’re my inspiration!
I’ve started with some simple stuff…the whipped coconut oil is another one of my favorites!
Thanks for the easy directions! I’ve ordered an awesome essential oil kit and I would like to start making my own cosmetics.
So there were some really mixed reviews on the Shea butter… Did you like it? Have you tries other brands before?
Hi Autumn…so far, I’ve liked it. I haven’t tried other brands yet because I got a 16 ounce tub of it.
Sounds devine! I’ve been playing with make at home beauty products for a while and this recipe looks like a great version. One of the best things I’ve found is using a potpouri pot I found at the thrift store to make my products, just toss it all in and stir once in a while. Super easy, which means I actually try the wonderful recipes I find.
GREAT idea!
This smells amazing! My only qualm is that is was a bit too waxy. Perhaps that has to do with me not measuring it, beeswax is hard to measure in a bar. Was wondering if you tried several recipes for this? If you have, do you think adding a bit more of the shea and coconut would make it less hard and more spreadable?
I used beeswax pellets so it was quite easier to measure. I think adding more coconut would make it a bit more spreadable but I also didn’t want it to be so soft that it would get mushy in warmer weather.
You can grate your beewax so measuring is easier and it also melts faster. 🙂
Great suggestion!!
Does the vanilla extract separate when added to the fats?
It didn’t blend homogenously but rather made tiny droplets.
I’m going to try this, but I think I’m going to use a vanilla bean instead of the extract (I have several beans I need to use). How many tubes of lip balm would this recipe fill, do you think? I have 12 tubes and I’m trying to figure out the right amount so I don’t have extra and have nothing to pit it in. I hate wasting..thanks so much
Hi Christina…since the volume can vary slightly I’m not 100% sure. Very sorry I can’t give you a more specific answer since I only tried it with the little pots.
I notice that you are using Lemongrass oil, and that you are storing your lip balm in plastic containers. I’ve always heard that it should be glass for the citrus type oils. Have you had any problems with this? Thank you
Hi Dorrie,
I haven’t had any issues but if you’re more comfortable with a glass container, you could use that too. Lemongrass is not a citrus 🙂
Any citrus oils used in lip balms are okay in plastic containers because the dilution is so high with the oils and butters. So no worries! 🙂 You would never want to store pure oils in plastic, but once diluted, you are good to go.
Lemongrass is not a citrus oil so you should be okay Dorrie
This looks great and I can’t wait to try it. I just wanted to let you know that you have a typo in the post title. Please know that I’m not trying to be rude, but everything about your site looks so clean, I just wanted to give you a heads up. Thanks for the great ideas!
Holy mackerel! So I do! Wow thank you so much for pointing that out, Marie. I really appreciate it 🙂
Did you encounter any issues with the honey not mixing well and floating to the top? I’ve had problems like this with previous batches with different recipes. Thanks
Hi Robin,
I didn’t have an issue but if you think it might be a problem you can leave it out 🙂
If I wanted to add raspberry seed oil (as an SPF) to this recipe how many drops would you recommend?
Hi Becky…wow, you’ve stumped me. I don’t have any experience with raspberry seed oil so I’m not sure!
I’m almost thinking that if your recipe makes 10 small pots then maybe 1 drop of the raspberry seed oil per pot, so 10 drops. I’ll do some research and see what I can find out.
That seems to be reasonable to me 🙂
I ended up using 30 drops. I found another recipe that called for 1 full teaspoon (~78 drops) when making 20 pots, so I cut that in half but reduced it even a little more. Raspberry seed oil smells like olive oil to me so didn’t want to overwhelm the scent of the lip balm. They came out nice. I used chapstick tubes.
Awesome! Thanks for keeping me posted, and those little tubes sound adorable!
How many of those little containers did this recipe make?
The size I got turned out to be about 10.
I’m going to make some this weekend. Just finished separating honey from wax we stole from our bees. I’ve made lip balm before but haven’t thought to use honey. Last batch was a little stiff for my tiny pots, but family & friends like it. Thanks!
Awesome recipe, just eager to know about the actual quantity this recipe can make for the average use.
I am having troubles with my dry lips and wish to use the natural product with no artificial content.
Really helpful.
Cheers!
This looks wonderful. Definitely will try. One thing I have is a preference for measuring ingredients by weight. I have a reliable digital scale and it makes consistent measurements so easy!
Jeanine, I’m excited to hear that you enjoyed it!
Made this tonight used wild orange instead it turned out great it was enough for 30…..3gram lip salve containers.
Awesome! Great idea!
When you refer to coconut oil are you talking about fractioned coconut oil or the solid?
Solid
Thank you so much!!!
