Out with the old, in with the new. I know, I know…it’s soooo played out.
“Start over fresh!”
“New Year’s resolutions…make them now!”
“Clean slates for everyone!”
But as cliche and tacky as it can sound, if the promise of another year gone past and put to rest and the wide-open possibility of 2014 is enough to get you in gear, then more power to your elbow. See, some of us are more intrinsically motivated people while others are motivated by extrinsic factors. It doesn’t make one right and one wrong—it just is. And if you know that the ticking over from 12-31-2013 to 01-01-2014 is your chance to start anew, to recommit, to finally accomplish that thing you keep putting on your resolution list, then by golly, so be it.
Goals are for you alone to marinate on, cook up and finally savor once you’ve accomplished them. Sometimes you shoot for the low-hanging fruit, and sometimes you aim stratospherically high, but when you hit that sweet spot—the intersection of a bit of hard work and persistence—the payoff can be huge. What’s on your agenda to accomplish in the first week, month or quarter of the new year?
My advice to you is to keep that goal a bit lofty, to shoot a bit higher than even you’ll give yourself credit for. Because recently, this happened…
Can someone pinch me?!
If you had told me on January 1, 2013 that’d I’d be standing elbow to (virtual) elbow with JOEL SALATIN, I’d have laughed you off your chair. Yet here I am. (If you don’t know Joel Salatin, he and his farm, Polyface, are featured in one of my favorite books of all-time, The Omnivore’s Dilemma. I read it when I first went Paleo—nearly four years ago—and it forever changed my view of food.) If you believe that big things will happen, dream big and you just might surprise yourself. Your biggest limiter to getting what you really want is…you.
So why the heck is little ol’ me rubbing virtual elbows with Mr. Salatin? We, along with 28 powerhouses in the world of real food, are featured speakers in the brand-spanking-new New Year, New You Summit from Village Green Network. If you’re looking for inspiration, motivation or a good old fashioned butt-kickin’ to get 2014 started off on the right foot, look no further!
