Nutrition for perimenopause and menopause can make the difference between feeling miserable and feeling human. Today, my good friend Dr. Anna Cabeca, board certified physician and women’s hormone expert, is sharing her wisdom with you in this guest post. Make sure you order her new book for women in perimenopause and menopause, The Hormone Fix. Take it away, Dr. Cabeca!
Women are Struggling with Perimenopause and Menopause Symptoms
“I can’t make it through the morning without something sweet.” That became the confession of a recent 40-something patient during our first consultation.
But honestly, I hear some version of this often among my patients.
They aren’t “feeling it” with their significant other like they once did. They’ve resigned their struggle and went up a jean size or two. They lack the energy and stamina to make it through the day, much less hit the gym after work. And erratic mood swings make them say things they immediately regret.
Does any of that sound like you?
I’m here to say it doesn’t have to be that way. You don’t need to feel tired, moody, or libido-less. Menopause is not a one-way ticket to weight loss resistance and feeling un-sexy.
I know how you feel. So do the women I’ve seen over the past 20 years in my practice as a gynecologist and women’s health expert.
From that experience, I’ve developed the key to reset your hormones and change the way you eat, look, and feel. That’s why I wrote The Hormone Fix: To help you get (and stay) healthy, lean, and feeling fantastic quickly in any decade of life.
I designed this new book so you can burn fat, balance your hormones, and supercharge your metabolism, all without the hunger, deprivation, and other miseries that most rapid-weight loss plans create.
How to Tweak Nutrition for Perimenopause and Menopause
Here’s how I get those and other benefits. You’ve probably heard Halle Berry or another celebrity discuss the ketogenic diet, where your body literally burns fat for fuel.
While ketogenic diets do create fabulous results fast, they come with some very unpleasant side effects.
Many of my patients complain about “keto flu,” which is just what it sounds like: You come down with some awful flu-like symptoms. A few patients even gave up on ketogenic diets because those symptoms were so unpleasant.
Staying on a ketogenic diet too long can also make your body more acidic. Along with that comes chronic inflammation that stalls fat loss. You’re doing all that work to maintain the correct diet and yet the scales won’t budge. How frustrating!
Still, I know the many benefits of ketogenic diets, and I felt determined to fix these issues. Consider The Hormone Fix as “the ketogenic diet, upgraded.”
I’ve incorporated the same healthy fats, moderate amounts of protein, and the right carbs into a science-based plan to improve health…without the side effects of traditional ketogenic diets. Here’s more about nutrition for perimenopause and menopause.
About the Keto-Alkaline Approach
I’ve called the plan Keto-Green™. When you add more vegetables (especially greens – hence the name) and fruits, you help make your body more alkaline. Goodbye, inflammation! No more miserable keto side effects.
With this nutrition for perimenopause plan, your metabolism works more efficiently, your hormones naturally become balanced, and you finally ditch that stubborn weight.
I’ve watched patients reboot their metabolism, reclaim their sex drive, and rediscover energy they had in their mid-20s…
…All while eating delicious, satisfying foods that balance your hormones and turn your body into a fat-burning machine.
I want to show you how to balance insulin, cortisol, and oxytocin – your three big hormonal players for fat loss – so you can feel fit and fabulous.
Maybe you’re struggling with nutrition for perimenopause, menopause, or postmenopause. Perhaps you’re just sick of dieting and not getting the results you want.
Keto-Green™ provides a roadmap because it:
- Helps you become more insulin sensitive. Issues like high blood sugar, weight gain, and menopausal miseries including hot flashes become a thing of the past.
- Dials down hunger and cravings. You feel full and focused all day, so you’re not tempted by sugary foods that sabotage your hormones.
- Detoxifies. You provide the support your body needs to minimize pollutants, chemicals, and hormone disruptors that stall your health.
- Creates vibrant health. All of your organs – your heart, brain, bones, sexual organs, gut, and skin – work better on this plan.

5 Nutrition for Perimenopause + Menopause Strategies
1) Load up on Keto-Green foods.
- Eggs, poultry, meat, and fatty fish (like salmon and mackerel)
- Veggies (like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, peppers, green beans, asparagus, all types of greens, among others)
- Healthy fats including coconut oil, MCT oil, olive oil, nuts and seeds, and avocados
2) Don’t skip breakfast.
If you usually skip breakfast, at the very least, try my Basic Keto-Green Shake:
Place 1 scoop of Dr. Anna’s Keto-Alkaline Protein Shake powder, 1 tablespoon MCT or coconut oil, 2 scoops of Mighty Maca Plus (a great alkalinity booster), and 8 ounces of water in a blender. Blend until smooth.
Another hormone balancing KG smoothie:
- 1 handful kale
- 1/4 cup sprouts (broccoli preferred but any will do)
- 1 tbsp MCT oil
- 1/4 avocado
- 1/2 cup almonds
- 1 tsp chia and/or flax seeds
- slice of ginger
Blend well with 8 ounces of water and ice if desired.
3) Get more sleep.
The good news is that you’re already doing it: It’s called sleep. Eat a satisfying dinner, close up the kitchen, and push breakfast back the next morning. You’ll naturally create a 13 to 15 hour fasting window, most of which happens while you’re sleeping.
4) Test, don’t guess.
My Keto-Green™ plan shifts your body’s primary fuel source from sugar to fat, a process called ketosis. You can find out whether you’re in ketosis with keto-pH urine test strips. Your urine pH should be in the 7-8 range in the morning. Please be patient: Getting there might take a few days, but you’ll still be burning fat along the way!
