Typically, a spritzer is a combination of chilled wine and sparkling water, but I wanted to create a similar feel using non-alcoholic ingredients.

This fall, the amount of new recipes I posted slowed down while I was coaching my Harder to Kill Challenge. There’s only so much creative juice in this brain of mine, after all.

Why I Made This Pomegranate Spritzer Recipe

But as the Challenge wrapped up, ideas started popping into my mind like crazy. This Pomegranate Spritzer is one of them.

The holiday season is notorious for its multitude of fancy, special alcoholic drinks. Everything from spiked eggnog to mulled wine is served up at parties and get-togethers.

And while you’re the only one who can decide if and when alcohol fits into your routine, I know many folks who abstain can feel a bit empty-handed during holiday mingling.

Holiday Mocktails Options

Earlier this year, I decided to give up drinking, so this Pomegranate Spritzer recipe is as much for me as it is for you.

My choices had narrowed considerably – red wines, liquor, and beer make me feel terrible – and an occasional white wine or cider started to become more frequent, so I just quit.

Or maybe you’re pregnant, doing a Whole30, or need to abstain because of dietary sensitivities.

Whatever the reason, I wanted to add a non-alcoholic option to the recipe index. (Click here to see my Easy Paleo Mocktails and my Holiday Kombucha recipes in the archives.)

So what I created here is a spritzer-like drink made from a spiced, mulled pomegranate juice that’s topped off with sparkling water and served with some fun garnishes.

How to Make This Pomegranate Spritzer

You can mull the pomegranate juice – a simple process where you steep the juice with whole spices and flavorings – ahead of time, then store it in the fridge for up to a week.

When it’s party time, just break out the glasses and sparkling water. That way, you spend more time with your guests and less time hiding out in the kitchen.

Of course, there are a bajillion different ways to tweak this Pomegranate Spritzer recipe.

You could switch up the type of juice – apple or cranberry would be nice – for example. The sky’s really the limit to what you can do.

And of course, you can make it more or less sweet by adjusting the pomegranate juice to sparkling water ratio.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups pomegranate juice
  • 2 oranges sliced into ~1/8″ thick rounds
  • 2 cinnamon sticks plus extra for garnish if desired
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 4 whole allspice berries
  • 64 oz sparkling water or club soda chilled (I like San Pellegrino)
  • 1 pomegranate arils separated for garnish

Instructions

  1. Get the sparkling water into the fridge to chill.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine the pomegranate juice, 4 slices orange slices, 2 cinnamon sticks, the cloves, and allspice berries. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a low simmer for about 30 minutes. Turn off the heat and use a slotted spoon to remove the orange slices and spices.
  3. Chill the juice in the refrigerator until ready to use. Be sure it’s cold or else it’ll knock the bubbles out of the sparkling water.
  4. To serve, pour ¼ cup (2 oz) of the mulled pomegranate juice into a glass. (I use stemless wine glasses but use what you have on hand. You can even chill the glasses for an extra-refreshing spritzer.) Then top with 1 cup (8 oz) sparkling water immediately before serving. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, slice of orange, and pomegranate arils.

  1. Tried this tonight and it was super tasty. So nice to have a non-alcoholic option. This will definitely be on the the drinks list this time of year while pomegranates are in season.

  2. I drop in a few frozen cranberries to keep the chill in the glass and to add some color. Thanks for a nonalcoholic (Holiday) drink!

    1. Yes but you can use sweetened or add some honey or maple syrup to the unsweetened if its not to your liking.

  3. Tried this out tonight with a girlfriend who is also mostly-Paleo, like me. We added some sparkling wine to the first couple of glasses and then switched to Perrier – it was an awesome way to feel a little festive without upsetting our guts (which is not hard, unfortunately, for either of us). Thanks for the great little recipe!
