Stocking a real food pantry is one of the most important steps that will help you stick to healthy eating.

In 2010, I completely changed my diet from one centered on low fat foods, “heart healthy” whole grains, and meat substitutes to a paleo framework. I distinctly remember the day I cleaned out my pantry and gave myself a fresh start.

And while I don’t eat strict paleo anymore, I still eat gluten-free and mostly grain-free. Real, whole, properly prepared, nutrient dense foods changed my health and my life.

Why a Real Food Pantry?

You may be the kind of person who takes a more gradual approach to changing your nutrition. On the other hand, you may be like I was and want to rip the band-aid off all at once. Wipe the slate clean, so to say. Neither is right or wrong.

But the bottom line is this:

If you bring less-than-healthy food into your home, you’re going to eat it. Or, you’re going to battle with every ounce of willpower you have left to pretend it’s not there.

You know I’m not an advocate for perfect eating – not even close – but if you want to make healthier choices, someone has to bring those options into the picture.

In other words, if healthier, real food options are there, you’ll be more likely to eat them. And, once you get more comfortable with cooking, having a well-stocked real food pantry is key for quick, no-fuss meals.

How to Stock a Pantry on a Budget

I’m just gonna come right out and say it: these days, eating healthier is way more expensive than eating junk food. Plus, cost of living is on the rise and paychecks aren’t always keeping up.

Making a lot of things at home from scratch can help you save some cash.

  1. All well and good, but Thrive Market discriminates against poor people and doesn’t accept SNAP, aka food stamps.)

    1. Hi Gloriamarie,

      Thanks for taking the time to write in. I did some research and also contacted Thrive Market directly to make sure I had accurate information for you. I understand that it’s frustrating that not all online vendors accept SNAP/EBT. Access to healthier options is certainly a social issue that’s very important.

      However, there are a couple things here that I want to clarify:

      Thrive Market does not control whether or not it can accept SNAP. There is a process with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) that online retailers must go through in order to even be considered for accepting SNAP. Thrive has applied and is still waiting.

      Also, in 2016, Thrive was one of the leaders in petitioning the USDA to allow online retailers to accept SNAP.

      Sadly, the US government is taking a long time to approve SNAP for online retailers. So, to clarify, Thrive is not blocking it. They initiated it and applied and are waiting. The hold up is with the USDA. If you’d like to take action, I would recommend contacting the Senators and Representatives for your state.

      In the meanwhile, Thrive does have a program called Thrive Gives where people in need can apply for grocery stipends.

      This should help clarify. If you have more questions, please reach out to Thrive directly.


  2. I see that you have sardines in your pantry list. I would like to eat more oily fish but find tinned sardines and tuna quite strong. They are good budget-wise so I would like to know how to enjoy eating them.
