The Inspiration For Watermelon Slush

Now, before we get into the recipe, picture this…

In July of 2010, I was sitting on a breezy balcony overlooking the azure waters of Dream Beach – yes, that’s the real name – on a small island off the coast of Bali. Waves from the Pacific Ocean crashed onto the beach, sending gentle mists of sea spray my way.

The sun was hot as my friends and I took a break from pedaling our bikes around the tiny island of Nusa Lembongan. I ordered a delicious glass of cold watermelon juice to quench my thirst.

It was sweet, tart, and cold in the best of ways. Brain freeze is a definite possibility!

I don’t know if it was the beach, the waves, the watermelon or what…

…but when I got home from that 2-1/2 week trip, I knew I had to recreate that little bit of watermelon slush heaven.

How to Make this Watermelon Slush

This Watermelon Slush recipe is so easy. You’ll combine seedless watermelon – pick a good one! – and blend it up with lime juice and ice. That’s it!

For the easiest way to cut up a watermelon, check this out. This is how I learned to cut a watermelon when I worked in a grocery store produce department.

For best results, make this right before you plan on drinking it. And if you can pre-chill your glasses, even better.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups watermelon seedless, chopped
  • 1 lime juice
  • 1 cup ice cubes about 6

Instructions

  1. Place the watermelon, lime juice, and ice cubes in a high-powered blender. Blend on high for 15 to 30 seconds until it has the consistency of a slushie. 

  2. Pour into chilled glasses and enjoy immediately. Garnish with a wedge of watermelon and lime if you're feeling fancy.
